About Ravenhall Correctional Centre

Ravenhall Correctional Centre is part of The GEO Group Australia, based west of Melbourne and is Victoria's largest prison for adult sentenced and unsentenced males. It's contemporary campus-style design provides a safe and humane environment that enables and nurtures GEO's Continuum of Care operating philosophy. 

Ravenhall also has a dedicated Forensic Mental Health Unit, a specialised Closed Supervision Unit for prisoners with significant challenging behaviours, and a small Mission Based Unit for prisoners who have never been in custody before. In recognition of the importance of Continuum of Care, Ravenhall extends its presence into the community by providing ex-prisoners with access to post-release support at GEO’s Community Reintegration Centre.

About the Opportunity

The Speech Pathologist is a member of the Complex Needs team. This team provides services to the specialist units at Ravenhall, which accommodate prisoners with challenging behaviours, mental illness, comorbid disorders, cognitive impairment, and other complex needs. The Complex Needs team is multi-disciplinary consisting of psychologists, social workers, an occupational therapist, and speech pathologist. 

The team is managed by a Senior Clinician; however, the Speech Pathologist will also be provided with external discipline-specific supervision.

The Speech Pathologist will:  

  • Provide expert advice and consultancy to clinical and custodial staff, including the facilitation of training and development for staff.
  • Assess, diagnose, and treat speech, language, and social communication disorders/difficulties.
  • Contribute and facilitate to post-release planning, including advice for community speech pathologist services and associated interventions.
  • Write clinical case notes and reports recommending treatment needs and outcomes.
  • Contribute to case-management planning and case reviews, behaviour management plans and community reintegration plans.
  • Liaising with internal and external stakeholders to support clients with speech, language and communication needs.

Your Skills & Experience

Key Selection Criteria:

  • A tertiary degree qualification in Speech Pathology and registration with Speech Pathology Australia as a practicing member.
  • Demonstrated experience in assessing speech, language, social communication, and literacy needs and developing intervention plans.
  • Previous experience in working with adults or older adolescents with speech, language, and communication difficulties.
  • Previous experience in working with people with challenging behaviours/behaviours of concern.
  • Knowledge of Positive Behaviour Support Principles.
  • Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively with others both cross-agency and as part of a multidisciplinary team of professionals.

Additional Requirements:

  • Ability to work within a correctional setting, which will involve direct contact with prisoners.
  • Valid and current full Australian driver’s licence.
  • Satisfactory completion of a National Criminal History Check.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a security clearance.
  • Work outside of ordinary business hours may be required on occasion.
